India’s COVID-19 cases cross 10.9 million; new spike in Maharashtra

India’s COVID-19 case tally rose to 1,09,25,710 with 9,121 new infections reported on Monday, according to the union health ministry data. The active cases declined to 1,34,033 as the recoveries increased to 1,06,30,892. The death count rose to 1,55,813 with 81 daily new fatalities. As many as 11,576 patients were discharged on the day.

Maharashtra reported new cases on Monday overtaking that of Kerala. The state reported 3,365 new COVID-19 infections, 3,105 recoveries and 23 deaths in the past 24 hours, according to health ministry data. The total caseload rose to 20,67,643, of which 36,201 were active infections. The total recoveries rose to 19,78,708 till now. The death toll has mounted to 51,552.

Districts including Amravati and Nagpur and Nashik in north Maharashtra have seen the number of new cases rising over the last few days. Taking into account the growing number of COVID-19 positive cases in Amravati district of Maharashtra since the beginning of February, the district administration has imposed a night curfew. The rise in the cases can be attributed to more number of people coming forward for testing, according to the district collector Shailesh Naval. Amravati district on Monday reported 449 fresh coronavirus positive cases, taking the count to 25,743.’

Kerala reported 2,884 new COVID-19 cases on Monday. With the decline in fresh cases on the day, the active infections too went down to 61,281. As many as 5,073 individuals were discharged on the day. The total confirmed caseload now stands at 10,07,019. The overall recoveries totalled 9,41,471 and the death toll has reached 3,998.

Meanwhile, in India 87,20,822 beneficiaries have been vaccinated so far with over 4.3 lakh of these receiving their shots on Monday.

Globally, the total confirmed COVID-19 cases have topped 109,676,360 with 2.4 million succumbing to the infection. The US have the highest caseload at 28,317,703, which is followed by India (1,09,25,710) and Brazil (9,866,710).
