India reports about 50 cases of Delta Plus variant of Covid-19

The Union ministry of health has informed that about 50 cases of Delta Plus variant of Covid-19 have been recorded across 11 states of India so far. According to the ministry, the maximum number of cases were in Maharashtra and the strain has been already detected in at least 12 other countries too.

Maharashtra has a total of 20 cases of the new mutation and Tamil Nadu has nine cases. Madhya Pradesh is next on the list with seven cases and Kerala with three cases. Gujarat and Punjab are also on the list with two cases each, respectively, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Karnataka and the Union Territory of Jammu have reported one case each, the ministry said.

The first case of the Delta-plus variant of coronavirus was reported in Bikaner in May. The sample of a woman who was tested positive for coronavirus was sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune on May 30 for genome sequencing and her test report came on Friday.

“The Delta-plus variant was found in a 65 year-old woman’s sample, who was asymptomatic and has recovered completely. She had already received both doses of Covaxin. She has already recovered from the Covid infection,” Bikaner’s Chief Medical and Health Officer, Dr OP Chahar, had said.

The Union ministry on Friday reconfirmed that 90% of the coronavirus cases in India are being driven by the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant as of now.
