In another grim milestone, India witnessed 4,192 new COVID-19 related deaths on Friday pushing the overall fatalities to 2,38,266. The country recorded 4,01,342 new COVID-19 cases on the day. With this, the total confirmed cases soared to 2,18,86,725 in the country. The active infection load comprised 37,21,882 cases.
Maharashtra reported 54,022 new cases. The total case tally of the state rose to 49,96,758 while the active infection load comprised 6,54,788 cases. A total of 898 deaths were recorded on the day taking the overall fatalities to 74,413
Karnataka confirmed 48,781 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 18,38,885. The active cases of the state have surged to 5,36,641. As many as 592 deaths reported on the day took the total fatalities to 17,804.
Kerala reported 38,460 new COVID-19 cases on Friday. The active cases in the state comprised more than 4 lakhs reaching 4,02,646. The overall caseload reported till now has reached 18,24,857. Also, 54 new deaths pushed the death toll to 5,683.
A total of 27,763 new cases were reported in Uttar Pradesh on the day taking the confirmed cases to 14,53,679. The active cases stood at 2,54,118. As many as 372 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours taking the death toll of the state to 14,873.
Tamil Nadu recorded 26,465 new cases on Friday. The total case tally has reached 13,23,965 while the active infections went up to 1,35,355. As many as 197 deaths were recorded during the day taking the total fatalities to 15,171.
The Tamil Nadu government has announced a two week lockdown from May 10 amid a surge in COVID-19 cases. The order was issued a day after the state recorded its biggest day spike of over 26,000 new COVID-19 infections. The lockdown will be enforced from 4 am on May 10 to 4 am on May 24.
Andhra Pradesh saw 21,954 new cases on Friday. With this, the total caseload has reached 12,28,186. The active infection load now comprised 1,82,329 cases. As many as 72 recent deaths took the overall fatalities to 8,446.
Other states which also reported a spike in fresh cases on Friday included Delhi (19,832 new cases), West Bengal (19,216), Rajasthan (18,231), Andhra Pradesh (17,188), Haryana (13,867), Chhattisgarh (13,628), Bihar (13,466), Odisha (12,238), Gujarat (12,064), Madhya Pradesh (11,708), Uttarakhand (9,642), Punjab (8,297), Jharkhand (5,973), Telangana (5,892), Assam (5,626), Jammu and Kashmir (5,443), Goa (4,195), Himachal Pradesh (4,177) and Puducherry (1,746).
