India recorded 26,291 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday taking the country’s infection tally to 11,3,85,339, according to union health ministry data. The total active caseload has gone up to 219,262 which is 1.93 per cent of the total infections in the country, while the recovery rate has dropped to 96.68 per cent, the data stated.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 11,007,352, while the case fatality rate stood at 1.39 per cent. The number of fatalities due to the pandemic mounted to 158,725 with 118 more fatalities being recorded in a day.
States like Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh are showing a steep rise in the daily new COVID-19 cases and have accounted for 87.73% of the new instances of the disease reported in a day, the union health ministry said on Sunday.
Maharashtra recorded 16,620 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, which pushed its overall caseload to 2,314,413. As many as 50 deaths reported on the day took the toll to 52,861. Over 8,861 patients were discharged during the day, taking the total recoveries of the state to 2,134,072. The COVID-19 recovery rate of the state is 92.21 per cent, while the fatality rate is 2.28 per cent. There are 126,231 active cases in the state at present, the state health department said in a statement.
As many as 108,381 people were tested on Sunday, which took the total test count to 17,516,885. Currently, 583,713 people are in home quarantine and 5,493 others in institutional quarantine.
Meanwhile, in view of the growing cases of coronavirus, a night curfew has been imposed in the Latur district. The district administration decided that curfew will be imposed from 8 pm to 5 am. Also, all the weekly markets will be closed till March 31.
The lockdown in Nagpur began today. The lockdown has been announced from March 15 to March 21 in the state. In Mira-Bhayander, a city and municipal corporation in Thane district a lockdown is in effect in containment and hotspot zones till March 31, while the rest of the place will be operational as per rules including hotels, restaurants and bars with 50% capacity.
Kerala logged 1,792 fresh COVID-19 cases and 15 related deaths on Sunday, taking the caseload state to 10.91 lakh and the toll to 4,396. As many as 3,238 people were recovered taking the total number of recoveries to 1,057,097, health minister K K Shailaja said.A total of 50,565 samples were examined on Sunday, taking the overall number to 12,291,194. The test positivity rate stood at 3.54 per cent.
Punjab on Sunday reported 1,501 new COVID-19 cases taking the total number of cases in the state to 197,755. With 20 new deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, the death toll has now reached 6,072.
The new cases come from the 30,949 samples collected, taking the total number of samples collected so far to 53,78,531. The total number of active cases in Punjab stands at 11, 550, according to the state health bulletin.
The Punjab government imposed a night curfew from 11 pm to 5 am in eight districts including Ludhiana, Patiala, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur. Amid a rise in coronavirus cases in the state, the department of school education has declared preparatory leaves for all classes in the government, government-aided and private schools in Punjab.
