India 10th worst-hit in the world with close to 1.4 lakh COVID-19 cases

India has become the tenth most affected countries in the world in the COVID-19 pandemic as the total number of positive cases reported in the country till Sunday night has crossed 1,39,000.

The number of new cases reported by almost every state has shown a sudden surge in the last few days as migrant labourers (inter-state) and repatriated non-resident Indians are back home in huge numbers.

The daily average of new cases has already crossed 6000 in the country and these fresh cases are mostly found within the back-home migrant labourers and non-resident Indians, as reported by the respective states in the last one week. India reported a total of 4,021 COVID-19 deaths so far and 57,721 patients have recovered. 

As the global toll (positive cases) has already crossed 5.5 million, US remained the most affected with 1.67 million cases followed by Brazil (3.65 lakh), Russia (3.44 lakh), UK (2.60 lakh), Spain (2.36 lakh), Italy (2.30 lakh), Germany (1.81 lakh), Turkey (1.57 lakh) and France (1.45 lakh).
