GDH could be a new biomarker for malaria

Amreen Ahmad et al have identified a genetic sequence in the body of malaria parasite that may help develop a more sensitive diagnostic test for the disease. Scientists reveal that an enzyme called glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) could be utilised as a potential biomarker for the diagnosis of malaria. Researchers collected 514 blood samples of malaria-infected patients from the eight malaria-endemic states in India. The scientists evaluated the genetic diversity and homology modelling of Pfgdh (glutamate dehydrogenase), ldh (lactate dehydrogenase) and aldolase genes of Plasmodium falciparium, a variety of malarial parasite that is the deadliest. The genes were then sequenced, and the nucleotide composition of the samples was compared. The nucleotide composition of glutamate dehydrogenase appeared nearly the same across the samples. Observing the highly conserved nature of pfgdh gene the researchers suggested that GDH could be a potential target molecule for Pan/Pf diagnostic test for malaria
