India to import remdesivir

The government of India has started importing the drug Remdesivir from other countries to ease its shortage in the country. The government has placed orders for procuring 4.5 lakh vials of Remdesivir. According to the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, the first consignment of 75,000 vials is expected to reach India shortly. Remdesivir is an antiviral drug that was found useful for the treatment of COVID-19.

The move is to cope up with the increasing demand for Remdesivir that has gone up manifold in the country with the current resurge in CoViD-19 cases. The drug can be used in the treatment of other infectious diseases also. The import order was placed by HLL Lifecare Ltd, a central government-owned company, which intend to procure 4,50,000 vials of Remdesivir from Gilead Sciences Inc. and Eva Pharma.

The Gilead Sciences, the US Company, will be dispatching 75,000 to 1,00,000 vials, within two days as per the press release from the Ministry. One lakh vials will also be supplied before or by May 15, as the second schedule of dispatch. EVA Pharma, the Egyptian Company will be supplying around 10,000 vials of Remdesivir for India during the first schedule of dispatch followed by 50,000 vials every 15 days of interval till July.
