India: COVID-19 caseload mounts to 10 lakh in Kerala as nationwide numbers plunge

India reported 11,431 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday. The country also saw 9,267 discharges and 87 deaths on the day. The total confirmed cases have reached 1,09,16,172 while the active infections now stand at 1,36,800. The overall recoveries reported so far have reached 1,06,19,083, and the death toll has mounted to 1,55,764.

Kerala saw 4,612 new cases on Sunday. The total caseload of the state has crossed 10 lakh to reach 10,04,136. The active infections now stand at 63,482. The state saw 4,692 discharges on the day taking the total recoveries to 9,36,398. With 15 deaths the total fatalities climbed to 3,986.

Maharashtra saw new COVID-19 cases at 4,092 on Sunday. The total caseload has risen to 20,64,278 while the active infections totalled to 35,965. The state recorded 1,355 discharges on the day taking the total recoveries to 19,75,603. As many as 40 new deaths pushed the total fatalities to 51,529.

Since the launch of the COVID-19 vaccination drive in India on January 16, a total of 82,63,858 beneficiaries have been vaccinated through 1,72,852 sessions, according to a provisional report of the union health ministry.

The beneficiaries who have completed 28 days after the first jab are now being given the second dose, as well. The DCGI accorded a period of four weeks to six weeks for the second dose.
