India’s COVID-19 cases cross 12K mark on Friday; 78 lakhs get vaccine

With 12,143 new infections reported on Friday, India’s tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 1,08,92,746. The active cases stood at 1,36,571 which account for 1.25 per cent of the total cases. The total recoveries crossed 1.06 crore, to reach 1,06,00,625, taking the recovery rate to 97.32 per cent according to union health ministry data. The total deaths due to the pandemic has reached 1,55,550 with 103 new fatalities.

Kerala recorded 5,397 new COVID-19 incidences on Friday. The total case load of the state has escalated to 994,052. The active cases stood at 63,961.The total recoveries have reached 925,871 with 5,332 new discharges recorded on Friday. As many as 18 new deaths pushed the total fatalities to 3,954.

Maharashtra registered 3,670 new cases on Friday. The total caseload is nearing 2.1 million. The total confirmed cases stand at 20,56,575 and the active infections stand at 31,474. The total recoveries have reached 1,972,475. With 36 new fatalities, the death toll rose to 51,451.

Maharashtra has been among the worst-affected states. The state is now the second-highest contributor to India’s daily COVID-19 caseload, after Kerala.

Over 77.66 lakh healthcare and frontline workers have received the first dose of the vaccine till Friday, said the government. A many as 2,61,309 beneficiaries were vaccinated on Friday. Meanwhile, the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine will be administered today to those who took the first shot on Day 1 of the nationwide inoculation drive on January 16. India has set a target of inoculating 30 crore people against COVID-19 by August.
