India reported 20,460 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, taking the overall case tally to 1,03,95,938, the health ministry’s data showed. The active infections stood at 2,25,120 after recording 19,662 new recoveries and 221 deaths taking the total recoveries and fatalities in the nation to 1,00,16,163 and 1,50,372 respectively. The total number of people who have tested positive for the new UK strain of the coronavirus in the country now stands at 73, according to the health ministry.
Kerala reported the highest daily COVID-19 cases at 6,394 on Wednesday taking the overall case tally to 7,90,883. Of the total cases, the positive active cases stood at 65,059, as of now with 7,22,421 recoveries and 3,210 fatalities recorded so far in the state. As many as 5,110 recoveries and 25 deaths were reported yesterday.
Maharashtra reported 4,382 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday as opposed to 2,570 recoveries. The active cases increased to 50,808. The total case tally has now reached 19,54,553. With 66 new fatalities, the death toll climbed to 49,825. The cumulative recoveries stand at 18,52,759 while the state’s recovery rate is at 94.87%.
“Of a total 1,31,34,019 laboratory samples tested thus far, 19,54,553 have returned positive with over 73,000 samples being tested in the last 24 hours,” said State Surveillance Officer Dr Pradeep Awate.
The case fatality stood at 2.55%, while the case positivity rate stood at 14.88%. Currently, 2,33,875 people across the state were in home quarantine and 2,523 were in institutional quarantine facilities, said Dr Awate.
Meanwhile, the health ministry has decided to organise another new dry run to test the vaccine roll-out on January 8 in all districts across India, said the health ministry.
“As a simulation of actual execution, another round of dry run/mock drill in all 700-plus districts of all states/union territories is planned on 8th January 2021 to ensure efficient planning and management for vaccine delivery in each district of all states/UTs. Each district will identify three types of session sites, similar to the previous dry run, including a public health facility (district hospital/medical college), private health facility and rural or urban outreach sites,” the release said.
The global tally of coronavirus cases stands at 87,618,339. While 63,119,308 have recovered, 1,889,524 have died so far. The US, the worst-hit country, has 21,856,450 cases, and 369,958 have died from the disease there. It is followed by India, which has 10,395,938 cases, Brazil (7,874,539), Russia (3,308,601), UK (2,836,801).
The British government has announced more than 1,000 COVID deaths in its daily report on the virus, and revealed another record rise in cases. It said that 1,041 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for COVID-19 as of Wednesday taking the UK’s death toll to 77,346. Another 62,322 new cases were also reported, after more than a week when around 50K cases were announced every day, said the government.
