The dry run for COVID-19 vaccination across all states has been initiated today on Jan 2 as India gears up for the roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccine in the country. The dry run is proposed to be conducted in all state capitals in at least 3 session sites.

According to the union health ministry, the objective of the dry run for COVID-19 vaccine introduction is to assess operational feasibility in the use of COVID Vaccine Intelligence Network (Co-WIN) application in field environment, to test the linkages between planning and implementation and to identify the challenges and guide the way forward prior to actual implementation. This is also expected to give confidence to programme managers at various levels.

Meanwhile, the expert panel has recommended granting permission for Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) with certain conditions to the COVID-19 vaccine being manufactured by the Serum Institute of India. Reports said that the SEC recommendation on Covishield has been forwarded to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), which is likely to take a final call soon.

SII had applied to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for EUA for Oxford COVID-19 vaccine on December 6, while the Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech had sought the nod for its indigenously developed Covaxin on December 7.
