India COVID infection tally at 5.4 lakh; Daily new cases resume in 20,000 range

India registered over 19,700 new positive COVID infections on Sunday. According to the Union Health Ministry, the total confirmed cases in the nation has touched 5,48,318, of which 210,120 are active cases as of now. As many as 16,475 deaths have been reported so far and there were 3,21,723 recoveries until now. 

Maharashtra remained to be the most affected state with 1,64,626 cases which is followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu with 83,077 and 82,275 cases. Besides Maharashtra and Delhi, Karnataka (13,190) and Andhra Pradesh (13,241) also have recorded increased numbers of cases.

The Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said the lockdown in the state will continue beyond June 30. Meanwhile, Manipur has extended the ongoing lockdown for another 15 days till July 15, announced Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday.

Globally, over 10 million cases have been reported so far. The U.S. still has far and away the most total cases, with more than 24.50,000. The death toll from COVID-19 reached half a million people on Sunday, according to a Reuters tally.

More than 4,700 people are dying every 24 hours from COVID-19-linked morbidities, revealed Reuters calculations based on an average from June 1 to 27. That equates to 196 people per hour, or one person every 18 seconds.
