India confirms 1.60 lakh COVID-19 incidences on Monday

India reported 1,60,694 fresh COVID-19 cases on Monday. The new cases pushed the total case tally of the nation to 1,36,86,073, while the active infection load soared to 12,58,906. So far, 1,71,089 people lost their lives to COVID-19 pandemic. As many as 96,727 discharges and 880 deaths were recorded yesterday.

Maharashtra reported as many as 51,751 new cases. The total case tally of the state soared to 34,58,996 while the active infection load increased to 5,64,746. As many as 52,312 discharges and 258 new fatalities were recorded on the day. The total fatalities have reached 58,245.

The active cases in Chhattisgarh continued to rise reaching 98,856 as the state recorded 13,576 new cases on Monday. The new cases pushed the total confirmed case tally to 4,56,873. As many as 132 new deaths took the toll to 5,031.

Uttar Pradesh reported 13,604 new infections on Monday. The total confirmed caseload of the state has reached 7,05,619 of which 81,576 are active cases. As many as 3,197 discharges and 72 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours.The death toll has risen to 9,224.

Delhi saw a surge of 11,491 new cases on Monday taking the total caseload to 7,36,688. The active infection load comprised 38,095 cases. As many as 72 recent deaths took the overall fatalities to 11,355.

Karnataka reported 9,579 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 10,74,869. The active cases of the state have surged to 75,985. The death toll of the state has reached 12,941 after recording 52 recent deaths.

Other states which reported a spike in cases on Monday included Tamil Nadu (6,711 new cases), Madhya Pradesh (6,489), Gujarat (6,021), Rajasthan (5,771), Kerala (5,692), West Bengal (4,511), Andhra Pradesh (3,263), Haryana (3,818), Punjab (3,451), Bihar (2,999), Telangana (2,251), Jharkhand (2,366), Odisha (1,741), Uttarakhand (1,334), and Himachal Pradesh (1,089).

Gujarat has extended night curfew to rural parts of Surat amid the spike in cases. Night curfew has been imposed in Haryana from 9 pm to 5 am, with effect from tonight until further orders. Uttar Pradesh, too, imposed night curfew in major districts and closed schools till 30 April. States like Punjab, Chhattisgarh and Karnakata have announced several restrictions. Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Odisha have announced restrictions on the movement of people from other states.

Globally 137,240,920 people have been infected with COVID-19 while 2,958,141 have succumbed to it. The US remains the worst-hit country with 31,800,724 cases, followed by India, Brazil, France and Russia. However, in terms of the total number of active cases, US tops the charts, followed by France, India, Brazil and Belgium.
