India’s COVID-19 cases surge over 1 lakh in a day

The daily COVID-19 cases in India soared past 1 lakh reaching 1,03,794 on Sunday. The new infections pushed the total case tally of the nation to 12,587,921. The active cases comprised 737,870 cases. So far, 11,679,961 people have been discharged while 165,132 people lost lives to COVID-19. As many as 52,840 discharges were reported on the day while 477 people succumbed to the infection.

Following a high-level meeting on Sunday, the central government has announced that a central team comprising public health specialists and clinicians will be sent to Maharashtra, Punjab and Chhattisgarh because of the high number of cases and a disproportionate number of deaths.

Maharashtra reported 57,074 new cases and 235 deaths on Sunday. The total confirmed cases of the state has reached 3,010,597 while the active cases surged to 430,503. The total number of fatalities has spiked to 55,878. Maharashtra has contributed 57 per cent of the total cases and 47 per cent of the deaths in India over the last 14 days.

The Maharashtra government has announced new restrictions including a night curfew in the state and a “strict lockdown” over the weekends from Friday 8 pm to Monday 7 am amid an unprecedented surge in coronavirus cases. The curfew extends from 8 pm to 7 am, and there will be a ban on gatherings of five or more throughout the day; malls, restaurants, bars and places of worship will be closed; home delivery and essential services will be allowed, announced Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Chhattisgarh reported 5,250 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, taking the total tally to 369,046. The active cases of the state have surged to 38,450. The death toll of the state has reached 4,319.

Karnataka reported 4,553 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 10,15,155. The active cases of the state have gone up to 39,092. The death toll of the state has reached 12,625.

Uttar Pradesh reported 4,136 new cases while Delhi witnessed a surge of 4,033 cases on Sunday.

Other states which saw a spike included Tamil Nadu (3,581 new infections), Madhya Pradesh (3,178), Punjab (3,006), Gujarat (2,875), Kerala (2,802), West Bengal (1,957), Haryana (1,904), Andhra Pradesh (1,730), Rajasthan (1,729), Telangana (1,321).

The prime minister emphasised the urgent need to implement a five-fold strategy including testing, tracing, treatment, COVID -appropriate behaviour and vaccination to curb the surge in new cases.

With 1,638,464 people inoculated in the last 24 hours, the number of total doses administered as on Monday 7 am, stands at 79,105,163, according to the official data of the ministry of health and family welfare.
