India’s COVID-19 case count surges close to 60K in a day

India recorded a spike of 59,069 new COVID-19 incidences on Thursday, pushing the total case tally of the nation to 11,846,082. While the overall number of recoveries have reached 11,262,503 the death toll increased to 160,983. The active caseload now crossed 4 lakh mark reaching 417,813, according to the data from the union health ministry. As many as 32,912 patients were discharged on the day whilst 257 succumbed to the infection.

With 35,952 new infections, Maharashtra reported the highest number of incidences on the day. The total case tally of the state soared to 26,00,833 while the active infection load totalled 262,685. As many as 20,444 discharges were recorded on the day taking the total recoveries to 2,283,037. Around 111 new fatalities took the death toll to 53,795.

Punjab recorded 2,661 new cases 1,735 discharges and 43 deaths on Thursday. The total case tally went up to 222,937, of which 21,405 are active infections. The total recoveries increased to 195,015 while the death toll rose to 6,517.

The active cases of Kerala rose to 24,377 after recording 1,989 new infections on Thursday. The total recoveries have increased to 1,082,668 and the death toll surged to 4,540, till now. The state also recorded 1,865 recoveries and 12 deaths on the day. With this, the total confirmed caseload increased to 1,111,898.

Karnataka recorded 2,523 new infections on Thursday taking the states active caseload to 18,207.

Other states which saw a spike included Chhattisgarh (2,419 new infections), Gujarat (1,961), Madhya Pradesh (1,885), Tamil Nadu (1,779), Delhi (1,515), Haryana (1,053), Uttar Pradesh (830), and Rajasthan (715) and Andhra Pradesh (758).

The cumulative number of coronavirus vaccine doses administered in India has crossed 5.46 crore with 5,46,65,820 doses being given on Thursday, the Union Health Ministry said.
