India’s daily case count crosses 53K as infections surge in MaharashtraMarch 25, 2021 0 By FM
India recorded a massive new spike in daily COVID-19 incidences on Wednesday, as the cases crossed 50,000 mark reaching 53,419. With this, the total case tally of the nation increased to 11,787,013 while the number of recoveries and deaths from the pandemic rose to 11,229,591 and 160,726 respectively. The active caseload now comprised 391,956 cases, according to the data from the union health ministry. As many as 26,575 patients were discharged on the day whilst 249 succumbed to the infection.
With 31,855 new infections, Maharashtra reported the highest number of incidences on the day. The total case tally of the state soared to 2,564,881 while the active infection load totalled 247,299. As many as 15,098 discharges were recorded on the day taking the total recoveries to 2,262,593. Around 95 fatalities took the death toll to 53,684.
Owing to the rising cases across the state, the Maharashtra government on Wednesday announced a lockdown in the Beed district from 26 March till 4 April. During the lockdown, all marriage halls, hotels and restaurants will remain shut in the district. All private offices will also remain closed during this period and their employees have been encouraged to work from home. However, shops selling essential commodities including groceries, milk and medicines, will be exempted during this period, said the officials.
Punjab recorded 2,613 new cases 1,455 discharges and 39 deaths on Wednesday. The total case tally went up to 220,276, of which 20,522 comprised the active infections. The total recoveries increased to 193,280 while the death toll rose to 6,474.
Kerala recorded 2,456 new infections, 2,060 recoveries and 10 deaths on Wednesday. The total confirmed caseload increased to 1,109,909 while the active cases remained at 24,265. The total recoveries have increased to 1,080,803 and the death toll surged to 4,528, till now.
Karnataka recorded 2,298 new infections on Wednesday taking the states active caseload to 16,886.
Other states which saw a spike included Chhattisgarh (2,106 new infections), Gujarat (1,790), Madhya Pradesh (1,712), Tamil Nadu (1,636), Delhi (1,254), Haryana (981), Uttar Pradesh (734), and Rajasthan (669).
The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 5.21 crore reaching 52,197,380 on March 24, said the union health ministry. A total of 1,354,976 vaccine doses were given on Wednesday. Around 1,214,055 beneficiaries were vaccinated for 1st dose and 140,921 health care workers and front line workers received 2nd dose of vaccine on the day as per the provisional report.
