India reports 16,577 new COVID-19 cases; Infections soar in Maharashtra

India recorded over 16,577 new COVID-19 infections on Thursday. The death toll has increased to 1,56,825 with 120 new fatalities, according to the data from the union health ministry. The infection tally rose to 1,10,63,491, while the recoveries surged to 10,750,680. The number of active cases increased to 1,55,986, which accounts for 1.41 per cent of the total infections. The national recovery rate stood at 97.17 per cent and the case fatality rate stood at 1.42 per cent, according to the data.

On Thursday, Maharashtra registered 8,702 new cases. The active cases in Maharashtra soared past 60,000 on Thursday, rising to 64,260. The state’s tally of active cases had gone past Kerala’s to once again become the highest in the country.

The authorities in Maharashtra’s Palghar have banned weekly markets and mass marriages across the district in view of the prevailing coronavirus situation in the state, according to state officials.

The district administration in Maharashtra’s Latur has ordered private coaching centres and training institutes to get coronavirus testing of all its students done in five days. Latur district collector Prithviraj BP gave an order to this effect on Thursday.

The active infections in Kerala declined to 51,879 after reporting 4,652 new recoveries on Thursday. The state also recorded new cases below 4000, at 3677. The total confirmed cases stood at 1,048,686 and the overall recoveries totalled 9,923,72 while the death toll has surged to 4,150.

Total number of samples tested up to February 25 is 214,661,465 including 831,807 samples tested yesterday, stated the ICMR. India has administered over 13,472,643 COVID-19 vaccines till yesterday.
