India: New COVID-19 incidences dips to 12K on Monday

India reported 12,584 new cases, lowest since June 17 on Monday, according to the union health ministry’s data. The total case tally has risen to 1,04,79,913, while the active cases continued to decline with an increasing number of recoveries. The active caseload now stood at 2,13,503. The nation recorded 18,578 discharges in the last day taking the total recoveries to 1,01,10,710. With 166 new deaths, the total fatalities have reached 1,51,364.

Meanwhile, the central and state governments are preparing for an immunisation programme in the country. The Serum Institute of India has begun the shipment of the first round of COVID-19 vaccines ahead of the nationwide inoculation drive. The government has ordered 1.1 crore vaccines from SII, 55 lakh from Bharat Biotech and committed purchase of another 4.5 crores from SII by April, according to a PTI report.

Several states have made preparations for the first phase of the inoculation exercise, including identification of vaccination sites and registration of healthcare and other frontline workers during the dry run. The nation-wide rollout is scheduled for Jan. 16.

Kerala, on Monday, saw 3,110 new COVID-19 positive incidences pushing its total case tally to 8,14,259. The active cases stood at 63,342 in the state. With 3,922 new discharges reported yesterday the total recoveries have risen to 7,47,389. As many as 20 new deaths took the total fatalities to 3,323.

Maharashtra witnessed 4,286 recoveries as opposed to 2,438 new COVID-19 cases on Monday. The active cases have dipped to 52,288. The total case tally has now reached 19,71,552. As many as 40 fatalities saw the death toll climb to 50,101. The cumulative recoveries stand at 18,67,988 while the state’s recovery rate is 94.75%. The case fatality stood at 2.54%.

“Of a total 1,34,43,229 laboratory samples tested thus far, 19,71,552 have returned positive with over 42,000 samples being tested in the last 24 hours,” State Surveillance Officer Dr Pradeep Awate said. Currently, 2,30,699 people across the state were in home quarantine and 2,468 were in institutional quarantine facilities.

Chhattisgarh saw 853 new cases, 1,255 recoveries and 15 deaths in the past 24 hours. The total case tally stood at 2,90,084, while the active cases totalled to 8,550. The death toll stood at 3,505.
