India takes total COVID-19 case load to 1,01,47,468 on Thursday

India recorded 23,444 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, taking the total caseload to 1,01,47,468. Less than 2.8 lakh of these are active cases, the health ministry said. A total of 1,47,092 people have died of the coronavirus in the country, with 336 of those deaths coming in the last 24 hours, the data showed.

Kerala reported 5,177 new COVID-19 infections after conducting around 56.1K tests. The overall caseload climbed to 7,26,688 of which the active cases remained at 63,157. As many as 4,801 people got recovered from the infection yesterday taking the total recoveries to 6,60,445 so far. With 22 recent deaths from the infection, the total fatalities took to 2,915 in the state.

Maharashtra saw 3,580 fresh COVID-19 cases on Thursday, as opposed to 3,171 recoveries. The number of active cases has dipped below 55,000 to reach 54,891 while the total case tally stands has elevated to 19,09,951. As many as 89 new fatalities saw the death toll climb to 49,058. The cumulative recoveries now stand at 18,04,871.

Karnataka reported 1,143 new infections and 1,268 recoveries in the past 24 hours. The case tally stands at 9,13,483 while the active infections stood at 13,610. The death toll remains at 12,039.

Heavy police deployment has been made in and around the Banglore city to enforce night curfew, which starts tonight from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. till January 2 morning.

No permission has been given for any programme and people who are moving unnecessarily will be booked, said Kamal Pant, City Police Commissioner. Public transport, goods vehicles carrying essentials and airport taxis are allowed, but anyone found violating night curfew guidelines will be booked under the Disaster Management Act, he warned.

Except for medical stores, shops and other commercial establishments will be shut down by 11 p.m.

Delhi witnessed 1,063 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 6,20,681. Also, 37 more deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of deaths to 10,384. Of the total cases, 6,02,388 people have recovered and there are 7,909 active cases.A total of 89,920 COVID-19 tests were done in the past 24 hours. The positivity of COVID-19 cases was 1.18% on Thursday. The overall positivity till now stands at 7.64%, as per the state bulletin.

Out of the total 18,779 beds available for COVID-19 treatment in the city, 15,966 were vacant. About 2,813 people were admitted in hospitals and 3,938 patients were under home isolation. There were 5,152 containment zones in the city as on Thursday.

The Delhi government was prepared to vaccinate an estimated 51 lakh people falling in various priority groups as soon as a COVID-19 vaccine was approved by the Centre, said the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday.

Following a meeting to review the vaccination process in the capital, Kejriwal said, “We need to completely stop any deaths and the low infection rate is encouraging. I have reviewed the situation around COVID vaccination in the city and we are completely ready for the process.”

Health care workers will be the first to be vaccinated, of whom there are around 3 lakh in the city; then there are around 6 lakh frontline workers such as policemen and sanitation staff and then those aged above 50 and with co-morbidities, of whom there are 42 lakh in the city, he said.

In view of the threat posed by the spread of a new variant of the coronavirus, the Odisha government has asked district administrations in the state to keep active surveillance on those who returned from United Kingdom (UK) from December 7, for COVID containment.

The state has reported 3,27,542 cases till now and the active cases stand at 2,667. The death toll stands at 1,903 in the state.

Globally, COVID-19 has infected more than 7.93 crore people and killed over 17.41 lakh, according to Johns Hopkins University. Over 4.46 crore people have recovered from the infection.
