HC allows Delhi govt to reserve 80% ICU beds in private hospitals

India reported 44,546 fresh COVID-19 cases on Thursday pushing the overall confirmed cases in the country to 87,28,585. The active infections stood at 4,84,145 with as many as 81,13,814 recoveries and 1,28,709 deaths seen so far. The country saw 49,266 recoveries and 544 deaths during the day.

Delhi on Thursday reported 7,053 new infections. As many as 104 deaths were reported in a single day, taking the death toll to 7,332. Of the total 4,67,028 cases, 4,16,580 people have recovered and there are now 43,116 active cases.

The Delhi High Court on Thursday allowed the city government to reserve 80% ICU beds for COVID-19 patients in 33 private hospitals in view of the situation in the capital where cases are spiralling daily.

Kerala reported 5,537 positive COVID-19 infections from testing of 57,202 samples on Thursday. The test positivity rate dipped to 9.68%. The state added 25 more deaths, taking the fatalities due to pandemic to 1,796.

The public health experts cautioned that it would take several peaks and troughs before the curve truly went down, and the virus would remain until a significant proportion of the population was infected or a vaccine helped achieve herd immunity. The case dip could be misread and lead to lax safety precautions.

Maharashtra reported 4,496 new COVID-19 cases against 7,809 recoveries on Thursday. The overall recoveries have risen to 16,05,064 in the state. The total case tally now stands at 17,36,329. The number of active cases has now come down to 84,627. With 122 deaths, the total death toll has climbed to 45,682.

“Of a total of 96,64,275 laboratory samples tested thus far, 17,36,329 (case positivity rate of 17.97%) have returned positive, with nearly 64,000 samples across the state being tested in the last 24 hours,” said State Surveillance Officer Dr Pradeep Awate. The state’s case fatality rate currently stood at 2.63% and the recovery rate stood at 92.44%.

West Bengal reported 3,856 new COVID-19 cases taking the total cases to 4,20,840. The active cases dropped to 32,185. As the state recorded 54 deaths, the fatality toll reached 7,506. The state saw 4,431 recoveries yesterday taking the total recoveries to 3,81,149.

A total of 2,112 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, taking the tally to 7,52,521. The total number of fatalities reached 11,440 with 25 deaths. The total number of recoveries stood at 7,22,686, with 2,347 people having been discharged on Thursday. The state currently has 18,395 active cases.

Infections in Tamil Nadu have been brought under control after various preventive steps were taken by the state government, said Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.Around 75,000 persons were being tested each day in the state, he added.
