India’s COVID-19 death toll crosses 1 lakh mark with 64 lakh new infections on Friday

India’s COVID-19 caseload crossed 6.4 million-mark to reach 64,71,934 with 79,883 new infections reported on Friday. With 1,068 more deaths witnessed during the day the toll climbed to 1,00,875. The country now has 9,45,058 active cases whilst the number of recoveries stood at 54,25,077, as per the data from the Union health ministry. As many as 76,339 patients were tested negative yesterday.

Maharashtra reported 15,591 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, taking its total case tally to 14,16,513, of which 2,60,876 are active infections. With a surge of 424 new deaths, the total fatalities climbed to 37,480 in the state. With 13,294 patients being discharged, the cumulative recoveries rose to 11,17,720. The recovery rate has risen to 78.91%, while the case fatality rate stands at 2.65%, according to the state health ministry.

Andhra Pradesh added 6,555 infections and 31 deaths on Friday. The case tally of the state stands at 7,06,790 of which 56,897 are active and 6,43,993 has been recuperated so far. The total fatalities reported from the state stood at 5,900.

Karnataka on Friday reported 8,793 more cases and 125 deaths. The total case tally stood at 6,20,630 of which 1,11,986 are in the active caseload. The death toll of the state stood at 9,119.

Tamil Nadu recorded 5,595 new cases taking the overall caseload to 6,08,885 on Friday. The state also saw the deaths of 67 patients. The active cases in the state stood at 46,294 while the death toll reached 9,653.

In another big spike, Kerala on Friday reported 9,258 fresh COVID-19 infections taking the total confirmed cases to 2,13,500. Owing to the surge, the State government said prohibitory orders would be imposed in the districts banning gatherings of more than five persons in public places from Saturday.

The state tested 63,175 samples on the day. The test positivity went up to 14.6% on Friday.

The total active cases in the state stood at 77,482. The active caseload in Thiruvananthapuram was 12,223, followed by Ernakulam with 9,420, Kozhikode 8,460, Kollam 6,837, Thrissur 6,392 and Malappuram 6,340 cases.

Four districts added over 1,000 cases. Kozhikode had 1,146 cases, Thiruvananthapuram 1,096 cases, Ernakulam 1,042 cases and Malappuram 1,016 cases. Kollam had 892 cases, Thrissur 812, Palakkad 633, Kannur 625, Alapuzha 605, Kasaragod 476, Kottayam 432, Pathanamthitta 239, Idukki 136 and Wayanad 108 cases.

The state added 20 more deaths adding to the cumulative toll at 791.  As many as 4,092 patients were tested negative during the day taking the total recoveries to 1,35,140.
