India continues reporting daily spike in new COVID cases; No sign of herd immunity yet

India reported 69,668 new cases on Monday taking the infection tally to 61,43,019 as of now. Of this, 9,47,235 cases are in the active status and  50,98,573 recovered. At least  96,351 succumbed to the infection till now in the country. While there are incidence of resurge in cases and reinfection reported at some locations, the country hasn’t yet seen sign of herd immunity in the population. According to the latest available data from Health Ministry, India has registered 85,194 recoveries and 775 deaths in the past 24 hours. 

Maharashtra reported 11,921 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, taking its total case tally to 13,51,153 of which 2,65,033 are active ones. As many as 19,932 patients were discharged taking the cumulative recoveries to 10,49,947.

As many as 180 more deaths took the State’s fatality toll to 35,751. However, only 56.7K tests were reportedly conducted in the state in the last 24 hours as opposed to the daily average of over 85,000 samples performed in the state.

Likewise, Kerala too reported a marginal decline in the number on testings conducted on Monday with only 33.6K samples being tested, according to the data from the state health ministry. Kerala registered 4,538 new COVID-19 cases on the day. The state’s COVID tally now stands at 1,799,23. The death toll due to the pandemic in the state has reached 698. Kozhikode district in Kerala reported the highest number of cases for the second day with 918 followed by Ernakulam (537), Thiruvananthapuram (486), Malappuram (405), Thrissur (383), Palakkad (378), Kollam (341), Kannur (310), Alapuzha (249), Kottayam (213), Kasaragod (122), Idukki (114), Wayanad (44) and Pathanamthitta 38 cases.

Andhra Pradesh also witnessed a slight decrease in new infections and deaths on Monday. The State reported 5,487 new cases and 37 fatalities, the lowest in nearly two-and-a-half months.
