India sees 76,014 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday; Record single-day spike third highest in world

India recorded 76,014 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, posting the highest ever single-day spike in the country after the start of the pandemic.

This is also the third highest rise in new positive cases that the world witnessed in a day after the US’s record of 78,427 cases on July 25 and 76,930 cases on July 17. The previous highest daily count in India was 70,488 positive cases on 22, August. With the Wednesday’s spike, the total tally of COVID-19 positive cases reported in India till now has touched 33,04,598.  

Since diabetes and tuberculosis have been found two major comorbidities with SARS CoV-2 infection, the government has on Wednesday issued two guidelines asking the COVID hospitals to test all patients for hyperglycaemia and also to test all patients admitted with COVID-19 symptoms for tuberculosis and all tuberculosis patients for COVID-19 positivity.   

With 1009 new fatalities, India’s total COVID-19 death toll also crossed the 60,000-mark on Wednesday. The country has reported 60,543 deaths in all so far due to SARS CoV-2 infection.
