Sharp rise in COVID deaths on Friday too; First dose of Indian vaccine administered at AIIMS Delhi

India saw a bigger spike in COVID related deaths on the second consecutive day on Friday. After the record single-day spike of 740 new deaths on Thursday, the country reported a bigger rate of fatalities at 757 in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to 31,416 in all so far. India also reported 48,962  new positive cases on Friday.  

Meanwhile, a 30-year-old male received the first dose of India’s indigenous COVID vaccine, Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin– on Friday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, which is one of the 12 sites selected to test the vaccine. 

The individual was administered 0.5ml of the intramuscular vaccine and monitored for two hours at the hospital, and has been discharged. The subject will be under medical supervision for the next two weeks, said doctors at AIIMS. The Drug Controller General of India had approved this indigenous vaccine candidate for clinical trials in June.  

With the close to 50,000 new cases reported on Friday, the total number or caseload in the country has already crossed 13 lakh to reach 13,36,874.  Of the total caseload 4,572,77 are currently active cases while 8,500,39 patients have been recuperated from the infection so far taking the recovery rate to 63.45%, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday.

The nation’s apex medical body Indian Council of Medical Research said that the body has tested up to 1,58,49,068 total number of COVID samples until 24th July. About 4,20,898 samples were tested on Friday. 

Maharashtra continued to be the most affected state with 3,571,17 total confirmed cases till date followed by Tamil Nadu (1,997,49) and Delhi (1,283,89).
