38444 new COVID cases on Tuesday; Delhi sero-survey shows signs of herd immunity

India reported 38,444 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday taking the total confirmed cases in the country so far to 11,940,90. Of these, 4,127,63 are active cases as of now while 7,525,42 patients have recovered, as per government data. More than 670 new deaths were reported due to COVID int he past 24 hours. With this, the total number of COVID related deaths have touched 28,785 in the country. India now has the seventh-highest COVID related deaths in the world, surpassing Spain’s fatality count of 28,424.

While,  the latest sero-survey conducted in Delhi indicated that almost one-fourth of the national capital population has been exposed to the novel coronavirus so far.  Experts consider this as a good sign as this puts the total number of actual Covid-19 cases in Delhi at over 4 million much higher than the reported figure of 1.23 lakh cases. This indicates much more people who were contracted the infection have recovered naturally without showing any symptom. 

The sero-survey involves testing of blood serum of individuals to check for the prevalence of antibodies against infection. The survey in Delhi was conducted by the National Centre for Disease Control in collaboration with the Delhi government. The survey had tested 21,387 samples between June 27 and July 10.

Maharashtra recorded over 8,369 new COVID cases, taking the total tally to 3,27,031. Of this, only 992,(12%), cases were from Mumbai. Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh saw 4,965 and 4,944 new cases respectively. Delhi recorded 1,349 new cases and 27 deaths yesterday.
