Even as the twice extended lockdown is about to end this week, the total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in India rose to 67,152 on 11 May of which 44,026 are active cases. The total number of deaths seen by the country so far due to COVID-19 has risen to 2,206.
With 48 new deaths after 1,165 fresh infections reported in the last 24 hours in Maharashtra, the state remained the worst affected and the total number of cases in the state has risen to 20,228. Mumbai alone has reported 12,864 cases and 489 fatalities so far, said the Ministry of Health.
So far, 20,916 patients have recovered successfully at various hospitals in the country taking the total recovery rate of the country to about 31%, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Meanwhile, the cases reported from Gujarat has reached 7,796. The state has reported a total of 472 deaths due to the infection.
Late hospitalization of COVID-19 patients due to fear of stigma and higher prevalence of co-morbid conditions like diabetes, hypertension, heart and kidney disease were the reasons attributed to the high numbers of COVID-19 death seen in Gujarat, said Dr Randeep Guleria, director of AIIMS -Delhi, during his recent visit to Ahmedabad.
The virus continues to wreak havoc affecting millions across the globe. The total number of COVID-19 cases reported until now reached 4,181,218 worldwide, with the highest number of cases reported in the US (1,367,638) followed by Spain (264,663), UK (219,183) and Italy (219,070).
