Circulating tumour cell markers to help early cervical cancer detection

Pan L et al investigated how circulating tumour cell phenotypes (CTC) were associated with the clinicopathological features of patients with early cervical cancer. The researchers analysed peripheral blood samples from 90 patients with early cervical cancer. The findings revealed 38.89% epithelial CTCs, 23.33% mesenchymal CTCs, and 14.44% mixed phenotypic CTCs. The study noted a positivity rate of 90% for CTCs in patients with stage I-IIA cervical cancer. Findings showed a close relation of CTCs with mesenchymal phenotypes to pelvic lymph node metastasis and lymphatic vascular invasion in stage I-IIA cervical cancer. Patients with early cervix cancer who had higher CTC count in their peripheral blood was at a higher risk of reaching stage II or experiencing pelvic lymph node metastasis, lymphovascular invasion, and deep stromal invasion. Researchers suggest that circulating tumour cell phenotypes may assist as a molecular marker in early diagnosis of cervical cancer micro-metastasis and in the assessment of disease status.
