The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) is closely monitoring the situation. However, no reports have come from the genetic sequencing laboratories so far identifying the variant of the virus that has caused the sudden surge in cases.
There are at least 4,868 confirmed Omicron variant infection cases in India until today. Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka and Gujarat remained the most affected countries by the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
India has also detected a total of 3011 infection cases caused by the Omicron variant of coronavirus across 23 states and Union Territories since the new variant was first confirmed in the country on December 2.
Maharashtra, which contributed at least 31 percent of Omicron cases, has emerged the worst affected with 578 people tested positive so far. This is followed by Delhi, Kerala and Rajasthan.
As on Saturday night, India has confirmed 1525 infections caused by the new variant of the virus –Omicron. The country’s Omicron tally was 1431 on Friday.
Large cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore among others in India have recorded a big spike in Covid-19 cases, particularly the Omicron driven surge, on Friday, indicating community level spread of the virus.
The state logged 5,368 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, which was 37 percent higher as compared to the number of cases registered on Wednesday. Mumbai, the capital city too saw a steep rise in cases at 3,671, a 46 percent jump compared to yesterday’s data.
In Mumbai, the case-positivity rate was 8.48 percent today.
“There appears to be significantly reduced ability of vaccines or prior infection to protect against symptomatic infection by the Omicron variant,” said the network in its latest bulletin citing global data.
Meanwhile, India has reported 6,358 new Covid-19 cases and 293 deaths in the 24 hours, the health ministry data showed on Tuesday. With more cases reported in Maharashtra , Delhi, Kerala and Telangana, India’s Omicron tally touched 655 on Tuesday.
