Nearly 2255 patients are waiting for an unrelated matched donor, according to the blood stem cell donor registry provided by Datri’s, a not-for-profit organisation.
The chance of finding a matched donor for patients suffering from fatal blood disorders like blood cancer and thalassemia, from within the family is only 25%.
With a 1 in 10,000 to 1 in over a million chance of finding an unrelated HLA genetically matched donor, we need more volunteer donors to sign up with the registry, points out Datri.
The registry helps find genetically matched unrelated blood stem cell donors, who are not a blood relative of the patient, but has a complete human leukocyte antigen (HLA) match to that of the patient’s.
With almost 4,20,000 registered volunteer donors, Datri has facilitated more than 640 blood stem cell donations.
Datri celebrated its 10th anniversary on 30th November, 2019 at Chennai, which was convened by various donors, recipients and hemato-oncology specialists from across the country.
